Our Federal display case troubleshooting guide is a great pre-service checklist that helps you diagnose any potential problem quickly.

Federal Display Case Troubleshooting Solutions

Won’t Run

If the refrigerated case isn’t running properly, check for the following:

  • No power – Plug the machine back in. If the power cord is broken, have it replaced by an authorized technician.
  • Tripped breaker or blown fuse – Reset the breaker or have the fuse replaced.
  • Thermostat is OFF – Make sure the thermostat is on. Some models have a green indicator that will light up when it’s on.

Lights Won’t Work

If the lights on the unit aren’t operating, check for the following:

  • Light switch is OFF – Turn the light switch to the ON position.
  • Loose light cords – Plug the light housing cords firmly into the sockets.
  • Tripped breaker or blown fuse – Reset the breaker or have the fuse replaced.

Temperature is Too Warm

If the case is running at an abnormally warm temperature, check for the following:

  • Blocked air inlet and outlet slots – Make sure both slots aren’t blocked. Create sufficient space around the unit for better airflow.
  • Blocked or dirty condenser coil – Create sufficient space around the unit or clean the condenser coil at least once every few months.
  • Defective evaporator fan or blocked evaporator coil – Both issues cause inadequate cold airflow. See if paper or foreign materials are blocking the evaporator. If the evaporator coil is obstructed from excessive frost, start a manual defrost cycle.
  • Open or loose rear doors (CRR, CRB, CD units only) – Close the rear door. If they’re loose, contact an authorized technician to adjust or replace gaskets, hinges or other door hardware.
  • Improperly installed display pans (CRR, CRB, CD units only) – Refer to the operator’s manual for to install the display pan correctly.
  • Improperly installed unit (CRR, CRB, CD units only) – Contact an authorized technician to reinstall or adjust unit, so there is proper airflow to and from the condenser.
  • Defective fans (IMSS60/84/120, EIMSS60/84 units only) – If the fans in the evaporator compartment and tower aren’t running, have them repaired or replaced by an authorized technician.

Glass Fogs or Case Sweats

Some fogging and sweating are normal. However, if the glass is fogging or the case is sweating more than usual, check for the following:

  • Warm ambient temperature – The unit should be in an area that doesn’t exceed 75⁰F and 55% relative humidity. Adjust the room’s temperature accordingly.
  • High case temperature (CRR, CRB, CD units only) – The unit should run between 38°F and 42° Adjust accordingly.
  • Items on top of the unit (CRR, CRB, CD units only) – Make sure that nothing is placed on top of the unit.
  • Defective fans (IMSS60/84/120, EIMSS60/84 units only) – If the fans in the evaporator compartment and tower aren’t running, have them repaired or replaced by an authorized technician.

Condensate Pan Overflows

(IMSS60/84/120, EIMSS60/84 units only)

If the condensate pan is overflowing, check for the following:

  • Unplugged bottom tub floor drain – Plug the drain on the bottom of the tub floor.
  • Unplugged drain trap – Plug the drain trap to the condensate pan.

Optional Condensate Pump Overflows

(IMSS60/84/120, EIMSS60/84 units only)

If the condensate pump is overflowing, check for the following:

  • Unplugged bottom tub floor drain – Plug the drain on the bottom of the tub floor.
  • Unplugged drain trap – Plug the drain trap to the condensate pan.
  • Clogged or pinched pump drain lines – Clean or unkink the drain lines on the pump.
  • Defective pump float – If the pump float is broken or operating incorrectly, have it repaired or replaced by an authorized technician.
  • No power to the pump – Make sure the pump is plugged in. If the power cord is broken, have it replaced by an authorized technician.
  • Broken pump – If the pump is defective and not pumping condensate, have it replaced by an authorized technician.
